平成30年度大学院入学式 式辞

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. It is a great pleasure to see you all at Tokyo Tech's 2018 Spring Entrance Ceremony for master's and doctoral degree students. In the presence of administrators, faculty and staff members, special guests, and friends, we are here to extend a warm welcome to the students joining us today. The number of students here is 1,667 for the master's course, 242 for the doctoral course, and 30 for the professional master's course. You have all worked very hard to get to where you are, and I congratulate you on taking a big step towards a better, brighter future.

I would also like to congratulate and thank the parents and family members who have joined us here today. You have dedicated so much time, love, and effort to these young men and women. Although we may not be seeing you as often as your sons and daughters, please remember that you, parents and family members here, are now valued members of the Tokyo Tech community. I sincerely welcome you all.

On March 20, 2018, Tokyo Tech was selected by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a Designated National University. There are currently five of these leading universities in Japan, of which Tokyo Tech is the only science and technology-focused institution. While the Institute has implemented a variety of education and research enhancements since 2016, it is now expected to guide the way towards new achievements in education, research, and societal impact. I sincerely hope that, as proud, mindful members of a united Tokyo Tech, you will join us in creating a better future.

Tokyo Tech has spent 137 years training responsible professionals for important roles across society. These professionals have greatly benefited humankind through their leadership, outstanding research, and technical ingenuity. They continue to do so today because Tokyo Tech's student-centered learning environment, cutting-edge research capabilities, and increased diversity provide students with the multitude of skills and experiences required in the 21st century.

Some of the talents in front of me today may have arrived here with interest in fundamental science, materials science, and devices and systems for the IoT era, Internet of Things, and energy science. Tokyo Tech has a long history in these fields and has made many achievements. Others may have interest in cyber-physical and social systems, including artificial intelligence and deep learning, sustainable social infrastructure technology, and holistic life science, such as cell biology and bioinformatics. Tokyo Tech will dedicate more research efforts to these new fields. Whatever your aspirations, you have come to the right place. Tokyo Tech's cutting-edge research is more diverse and interdisciplinary than ever, and from today, you are all a part of this diversity.

By the way, what is "diversity" for you? For some, it may mean the inclusion of people in projects, groups, or organizations regardless of their country of origin, socioeconomic status, age, physical abilities, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, or other ideologies. Tokyo Tech has been doing this since 1896, when the first inbound exchange students joined the Institute.

But diversity is much more than just inclusion. It also refers to the vast range in our communication, learning, and research styles, our knowledge, talent, imagination, interests, and even our lifestyles. And most importantly, it refers to the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive environment. Tokyo Tech provides this environment. Now it is your task to explore. Develop your awareness and appreciation of diversity and you will grow individually through the shared journeys of others. A diverse classroom or research team is not only the sum of its components. It also includes the infinite possibilities that may emerge through the interactions in such collaborative groups. However we define it, diversity fosters creativity. As you immerse yourself in your research, I hope you openly share your unique contributions to enrich your own lives and the lives of others.

As Tokyo Tech students, you are now free to enjoy this environment of diversity and autonomy, but the world is also hungry for your leadership. All of you are already leaders in more ways than one, and I encourage you to start exercising and honing these skills. You will pursue your passions and begin to master your field of specialization. Whatever your approach, your active engagement will create positive impact in the science and technology field. This positive impact may reach much further than you can possibly imagine.

Or perhaps, as Tokyo Tech students, you already can imagine.

皆さま、こんにちは。

東京工業大学（以下、東工大）平成30年度大学院入学式において、修士課程、専門職学位課程、ならびに博士後期課程の皆さんをお迎えできることを大変嬉しく思います。ご来賓ならびに本学役職員?部局長のご列席のもと、本日東工大に加わる学生の皆さんを心より歓迎いたします。1,667名の修士課程、30名の専門職学位課程、242名の博士後期課程の学生を迎え入れました。皆さんはこれまであらゆる場面において大変な努力をされたことと思います。そして、より良い、明るい未来に向かって大きな一歩を踏み出されたことをお祝い申し上げます。

また、本日ご列席のご両親とご家族の皆さまにもお慶びと感謝を申し上げます。ご家族の皆さまにおかれましては、この優れた若者たちに多くの時間、愛情、努力を捧げられてこられました。私たちは、ご家族の皆さまに、ご息女?ご子息たちほど頻繁にお目にかかることはできませんが、皆さまも本日より東工大コミュニティーの貴重なメンバーです。心より皆さまを歓迎申し上げます。

去る3月20日、東工大は文部科学省から、指定国立大学法人に指定されました。現在、我が国では5つの指定国立大学法人がありますが、本学は唯一の理工系総合大学です。本学はこれまでも教育改革、研究改革を進めてきましたが、更に高い目標を掲げ、新たな第一歩を踏み出したところです。皆さんも、本学の一員としての自覚と誇りをもって、一緒に東工大の新しい歴史を築いていただきたいと思っています。

東工大は、この137年間、社会の重要な役割を果たすために、責任あるプロフェッショナルを輩出して参りました。彼らプロフェッショナルは、リーダーシップ、優れた研究、ものつくりにより、人類に大きな恩恵をもたらしました。このことは、学生主体の学修環境、最先端の研究力、多様性の強化によって東工大が21世紀に求められる多くのスキルと経験を学生に提供することによって、今日にも引き継がれています。

私の目の前にいる才能ある皆さんは、基礎科学、材料科学、IoT（Internet of Things）時代のデバイス?システム、エネルギー科学に興味を持っているかもしれません。本学はこれらの分野で長い歴史と数多くの成果を生み出してきました。あるいは、人工知能や深層学習を含んだサイバーフィジカルソーシャルシステム、持続的社会インフラ、細胞生物学やバイオインフォマティクスを含む生命科学などに興味をもっているかもしれません。本学はこれらの分野に、より注力しようとしています。皆さんが抱いている大志がどんなものであれ、夢を叶えるにふさわしい場所を選ばれました。東工大の最先端の研究はこれまで以上に多様で学際的になっています。そして、今日から皆さんもこの多様な最先端研究を担う一員です。

さて、皆さんにとって「多様性」という言葉は何を意味しますか？ ある人たち にとっては、出身国や社会経済的地位、年齢、身体能力、性的指向、宗教的?政治的思想、あるいはその他のイデオロギーの違いにかかわらず、プロジェクト、グループ、または組織に様々な人を受け入れることを意味するでしょう。東工大では、1896年に最初の留学生が入学して以来、こうした多様な背景を受け入れる文化を育んできました。

しかし、多様性はこうした多様な背景を受け入れること以上のものです。コミュニケーション、学修や研究のスタイル、知識、才能、想像力、興味、さらにはライフスタイルまで広範囲に及んでいます。そして、最も重要なのは、安心でき肯定的な環境でこれらの違いを探求することです。東工大はこの環境を提供しています。これからは、こうした違いを探求することが皆さんの仕事です。他人との共存を通じて、皆さんの意識を高め、多様性を認識して、お互いに成長していくのです。多様な学修環境や研究チームは、その構成要素を足し合わせただけのものではありません。このような共同体グループでの相互作用を通じて生じる無限の可能性も含まれています。だから、私たちは多様性は創造性を育むものだと定義します。自分の研究に没頭する際に、自分の人生と他者の生活を豊かにするために、あなたにしかできない独自の貢献を、より多くの人たちと共有してほしいと思います。

皆さんは東工大の学生として、多様性と自律性を自由に享受できるようになりました。そして、世界は皆さんのリーダーシップを必要としています。皆さんは既にあらゆる意味でリーダーであり、さらにスキルを磨き発揮していかれることと思います。皆さんがそれぞれの情熱を追求し、専門分野を習得して下さい。どのように取り組もうとも、それらは社会にポジティブなインパクト、それも皆さんが想像する以上のポジティブなインパクトをもたらすと思います。

あるいは、東工大の学生である皆さんはすでに想像することができますね。

あらためて、おめでとうございます。
